Spend the weekend at Cederberg

Check out Cederberg and discover incredible nature hikes.

The Cederberg Conservancy is located approximately 250 km north of Cape Town and offers about 182 000 hectares of untouched nature. The Conservancy was founded in 1997 by landowners in order to establish sustainable management for the unique environment as the area was largely exploited between 1903 and 1973. Large amounts of cedar wood and other plants were felled, which has brought the cedar tree close to its extinction.

Although 70 years of abuse have left their trace, the Cederberg area still has a rare and interesting flora and fauna. The Fynbos biome is mostly located within the Cederberg area and offers an incredible variety of plants.

The fauna of the Cederberg is also just as impressive as it is a home to many mammals such as baboons, dassies, antelopes, porcupines, badgers, otters, aardvarks or even the rare Cape Leopard. Furthermore the area is famous for its bird watching where an extensive number of different species can be observed.

Not enough offering a unique flora and fauna, the Cederberg area also shows famous rock art, which has been dated to be as old as 8.000 years to 100 to 200 years old. San and Khoi people populated the area from early times and left those stunning rock arts. Most of these rock art paintings display animal scenes. Scientists believe that there is a deeper religious meaning behind those paintings, but go to Cederberg and decide for yourself what you think they mean.

The area offers amazing hikes with the possibility to either have a day trip or stay between 1 and 5 nights. Accommodation ranges from simple camping sites up to luxurious lodging.

Besides the wide range of activities that already have been mentioned the area offers other interesting things to do such as mountain biking, rock climbing or horse back riding.

Reaching Cederberg is easy as the roads leading there are good gravel roads, however if you need to hire a vehicle that suits those conditions, our friendly sales team will sure be able to assist you in making the right choice.
